Confessions of a Firearms-aholic!

A little about me. I have been shooting off and on for about 20 years. I was started with a BB gun by my dad when I was young. As I grew Older I progressed up to larger Caliber guns like everyone else LOL. I have always enjoyed shooting and the shooting sports. In the last few years, I have been taking my shooting much more seriously and began training and practicing more and more. I discovered Competition and finally found a sport that with my physical disabilities I can participate in! I have a bad back and Type 2 Diabetes so it makes running around very painful for me, but IDPA and Steel Challenge seem to be paced slow enough for me to get around ok.

I started shooting Competitively in 2013. I shoot mainly Steel Challenge and IDPA. I don’t shoot IDPA for the “tactical training”, I shoot to win. I play the game. I would like to progress into GSSF, Long Range Rifle and Rimfire benchrest at some point. I harbor this secret dream to shoot in a major match in the next few years.

Both my wife and I are NRA Certified Instructors in Basic Pistol. As much as I love to shoot, I love to introduce new people in to the sport and love to teach shooting.

I took up reloading in late 2013 and love doing it. I have been able to save a little money doing it, but it is definitely a hobby all in itself. I reload 9mm right now, but want to start .45 and .40 soon.

In August of 2014 I was contacted by and started writing for Wide Open Spaces, an online destination for all things hunting, fishing, shooting and outdoors providing content, commerce and community, as a contributing writer. So I guess that means I am now a published author. One of the Directors found my blog and contacted me about writing for them. It was one of those things I had hoped would happen one day because of this blog and it did! In June of 2015, I decided it was time to move on from Wide Open Spaces, so I no longer write for them, but it was a great experience and I have so many articles up there. Please feel free to read those.

I am also the admin of two Facebook groups about competition shooting in the Cincinnati, Oh Area:

Outside of guns, I work full time in Healthcare in IT and am married to the most wonderful woman in the world. I don’t think I could have accomplished so much in my hobby or life without her support. I am also a proud step-father to a fantastic teenage son and a new dad to a new baby boy (Yes future shooter I hope). I couldn’t have asked for a better step-son.  My other interests include Traveling, Amateur Radio, Photography, Video games, Severe Weather, Cars and web design.

IDPA Classifications:

  • ESP/SSP: Marksman (March 10, 2015)
  • SSP: Marksman (March 1, 2014)

  1. I remember when I had the opportunity to teach my son how to shoot a BB gun to stop a chipmunk infestation at the house. I used a firearm for 39 yrs. in Law Enforcement and he became a highly skilled firearms enthusiast. It seems we have more in common they we thought.

    1. I remember when my Dad took me to the range for the first time. I got to shoot his .357 magnum. That gun scared the hell out of me but it did show me that I could handle any of them. Funny how things work out like that huh?

  2. Jeff-
