I know, why am I concerned with when Daylight Savings Time starts? Simple. This is a great time to review your home safety and defense plans and equipment.
So at 2 AM on Sunday, our clocks will swing forward one hour. But this whole weekend is a great time to check everything else.
Make sure that you check the batteries in your smoke detectors, CO detectors and weather radios. If you are a Ham Radio Operator or have other two-way radios for emergency communications, this is a great time to check the batteries and programming in those radios as well.
Review your family emergency plans. This includes Tornado Plans, Fire Plans, Hurricane or Earthquake Plans, if your area is prone to those things. Make sure everyone knows what to do, where to go and who to contact if needed. Also keep a bag or two packed with essentials in case you need to bug out in an emergency. I usually stick a few extra things in my everyday bag on nights when we are expected to have severe weather, just in case. This way I have my laptop and tablet as well as other things. I may sit down and go through my everyday bag in a post here soon. We also make sure to keep the baby’s diaper backpack stocked with diapers, wipes, clothes, toys, sippy cup and other things in case we need to bolt.
Rotate your vehicle emergency kits. Set them up for Spring and Summer. Chances are you probably won’t need the thick wool blankets if you get stranded somewhere during the heat of July and August.
Review your family’s home defense plans. A couple of years ago, I wrote a couple of posts about reviewing your home defense plans. You can check them out here:
Over all, now is a great time to review your emergency plans. You never know when you may need to put them into action!
