I have been looking for a way for a while now to have an option for the summer for either off body carry or pocket carry. I like to carry a full size service pistol outside the waist band on my belt, but since I don’t like to open carry it makes it very hot in the summer to wear 2 shirts all the time. And so my search began. I kept looking at off body carry options to allow me to carry the same pistol I always carry and have the added advantage of being able to carry a bunch of other stuff with me on a daily basis. My I-Pad, some reading material, medicines, etc.
I started by looking at bags the offered me a way to have a holster put in them in a compartment and still have enough room to carry everything and be comfortable. In my search I have found that:
- I prefer backpacks to messenger style bags
- All the bags that do what I want scream “GUN!” as they are tactical looking and obvious what I am trying to do
- All the bags that don’t scream “GUN!” are too small for my needs
- They are all in the 100 – 150 Dollar range
I know this is supposed to be about the Maxpedition Holster. Bear with me. You need this back story to understand how I came to this.
So everything I was looking at was too expensive or not low profile enough. Especially since I already have a bunch of expensive bags I had purchased for other pursuits just sitting in the closet at home.
While at the NRA Annual Meetings in April in Indianapolis, I started looking at bags again for CCW as there were a few vendors there that offered them and I thought I might be able to find something for a good discount price. I thought I had found one, but it wasn’t what I thought it was. Then My loving wife offered a really good idea. Why not look for a velcro style holster and use one of the bags at home? I realized that this was a brilliant Idea and that’s one of the many reasons I married her. And our search began anew. And that’s how I came to owning the Maxpedition Universal CCW Holster.
One of the bags I have is an old LowePro Slingshot Camera bag. One of my other hobbies is Photography and I bought this bag and then upgraded a year later to a bigger Slingshot for all my camera equipment. So this was sitting in the closet not being used. These are some of the most comfortable Camera bags I have ever owned, even when fully loaded, so I thought I would turn my old one into an Everyday Carry bag (EDC Bag). There is velcro on bottom of the bag inside and that is handy!
The Universal CCW holster is made of nylon and has Velcro on the one side to attach it to a bag with velcro on it. Once you fit the holster to your gun (wrap it around the trigger guard tightly) you can place the holster in the bag at the angle you want. I placed mine so that the muzzle is down all the time and I can still draw from the side of the bag. It fits snuggly and doesn’t move. This is the answer for my EDC needs for the summer. The bag is nice a sturdy and the gun stays in place even walking around all day. I can put my wallet and keys and phone in the bag and carry it all around.
I’ve been using it for a week now and I love it. It was such a great idea and works well for me. This summer is going to be a good one for me with this setup. In a future post, I will go through my EDC bag for ya so you can get some ideas for your EDC bag.
So if you are looking for a holster you can stick in an existing bag, this one is great for you.
