At least according to one of my son’s onesies…
So I started on the journey to get fit earlier this year, but I fell off the wagon and ended up not going for a while. Around the 30 week mark during the pregnancy, my bride had some issues and was put on bed rest for most of the rest of her pregnancy. Because of that, she stopped going to the gym and I kind of used it as an excuse for me not to go either. So we stopped going for a while.
But last night we decided it was time to get back to going. I want to get into better shooting shape next year. There are some things in the works for some changes for what and how I shoot.
So for the first time in a number of months, I stepped into the workout room and I exercised. It hurt, I was super sweaty and I was worn out. But I actually had fun. I walked on the treadmill for about 10 minutes and then used a bike for 10 minutes. Now I know that is not a lot, but for the first time, I think it was pretty good. I need to work on it and it will get better over time.
How does this fit into shooting? Well quite simply, I need to get into shape. Not only for my health, but as part of my self defense plans and part of being athletic. I won’t necessarily call myself an athlete just yet, but as in all sports, the competitor needs to be in good physical shape. Depending on the match I am shooting, I need to be able to run around and be quicker getting on target. I can’t do that right now. I look at someone running and I get out of breath.
By the same token, if I need to defend myself or my family, I can’t run for cover, or grab the baby and run.
Plain and simple. I am obese, out of shape and out of practice. Granted while round is a shape, I need to get into better shape. I need to be able to walk far distances and I need to be able to move when I need to.
So this winter, I will continue to go and get in better shape and hopefully be ready to go when next shooting season rolls around. Till then I will do a better job at documenting my course.
